There is a recent plasticizer DEHP contamination scare in Taiwan involving DEHP-tainted food and drinks. According to media reports as of 24 May 2011, Taiwan has recalled or removed from store shelves nearly 460,000 bottles of sports drinks, fruit juice, tea beverages, as well as 20,000 kilograms of fruit juice, fruit jam and yogurt powder, and 130,000 packs of probiotic powder. The Taiwan Department of Health has reported that the number of tainted products is expected to snowball. With the global flow of products, these tainted products may have reached overseas, such as Southeast Asia, Hong Kong and Shanghai.
DEHP is a plasticizer commonly found in plastic products. It is a colorless, tasteless liquid. In high doses, it affects the reproductive system of rodents and increases their risk of liver tumors. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classifies DEHP as a group 2B carcinogen that is a confirmed animal carcinogen and possibly carcinogenic to humans.
