據傳說當時釋迦族及淨飯王宮都深切地希望太子能成為統治天下的轉輪聖王，因此反對太子出家，甚至派內外官署加以嚴防守衛，以阻止太子出家，後來由於天神之協助，太子才得以順利離開王宮出家。
