When you think of all the great inventions, the common lightbulb may not immediately spring to mind.

It should, though. The incandescent lightbulb gives us a safe way to light our lives.

It also saves our eyes by providing a steady, strong light that we can rely on.

Thomas Edison is often credited with this wonderful invention, but he wasn't the first to patent the lightbulb.

A British scientist named Joseph Swan developed a similar lightbulb shortly before Edison's 1879 model.

In fact, Swan's house was the first to be lit by an electric lightbulb.

However, Edison's lightbulb had the advantage because it was made of a stronger material and could last longer.

At the time, there was great debate ─ and even lawsuits ─ concerning the true inventor of this revolutionary device.

As a result, Swan and Edison agreed on a partnership to from the Edison and Swan United Electric Company.

What is to be learned by all this?First, sometimes it's good to question your knowledge of history.

Second, great inventions are not always created by just one person.

Many times, an inventor improves on the designs of others.

It's amazing what we can accomplish when we put our heads together.
