Once upon a time, there was a nice young man who was called Niulang(牛郎), which means cowherd.
One day, kind-hearted Niulang took in a sick ox that he found near the mountain.
He patiently tended the ox until it was healthy again.

The ox spoke one day and told Niulang to go to the river.
The cowherd obeyed and found seven beautiful sisters bathing and playing there.

With the ox's encouragement, Niulang playfully hid some of their clothes.

The girls elected their youngest sister, Zhinu(織女) the weaver, to ask Niulang to return their clothes.
She was the prettiest of them all. When Zhinu and Niulang saw each other, they fell in love.
"Marry me, and I'll give your clothes back," Niulang said.
The sisters flew back to heacen, but Zhinu stayed and married Niulang.
The cowherd worked in the fields while Zhinu wove every day.
They lived a simple, happy life and had two children.
Zhinu was so in love that she never thought about returning to heaven.
