As a teenager, during one of his stints at a mental institution – admitted for attempts of suicide – Patch realized that by engaging with people and making people laugh, it actually helps them to heal themselves. So did he. This inspired him to become a doctor, making him the oldest first year student in class.
His strong belief that the doctor’s role was beyond merely writing prescriptions – and one of developing a relationship with his/her patients was not received well by his Dean. Add this to, the fact that he ran his own clinic experimenting his idea without a license – he was kicked out. However, he came back to convince the board that his means help ensure the patients ‘spirits’ are raised, which helps them deal with any situation, regardless of the outcome ! Convinced, the board reinstated him.
