Japanese authorities say the death toll from Friday’s earthquake and tsunami has risen above 3,000, while at least 15,000 people are still missing. As the country deals with these disasters and potential nuclear fallout, another quake hit Shizuoka prefecture at around 9:30 p.m., Taiwan time. This quake had a magnitude of 6.0 and occurred at a relatively shallow depth of 10 kilometers.


Meanwhile, Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry has raised its travel alert level to red for Japan’s Kanto region, which includes Tokyo. It’s the ministry’s highest warning level and advises against any travel to the area. Red alerts had already been issued for Honshu’s northeast and Hokkaido’s eastern and southern regions.




The turmoil that often comes in the wake of disasters seems noticeably absent in Japan. To find out why, FTV reporter Susan Liao looked at a Taiwan blog entry posted on the day of Japan’s earthquake and that has since gone viral. The blog gives credit to Japan’s official broadcaster, and local experts compared its coverage to that of Taiwanese media.

A Taiwanese blogger attributed Japan’s calm reaction to the disasters it’s facing to its official broadcaster, NHK.

The blogger advocates NHK’s coverage style, saying it, quote: [[CG1]] “Immediately showed sober footage, taken from the air, that gave the public accurate, detailed info on the tsunami.”

Even though other stations may have flashier graphics, media experts agree that NHK delivers calm coverage that provides a large amount of useful information.

Media is meant to bring society forward. Of course you could stimulate your audience by providing them with something like an amphetamine, but do we want to rise or degenerate?

Taiwan’s media still have a lot of room to improve, especially when they report disaster news about people’s safety. There’s no gray area.

Flashier footage may attract audiences, but when the main goal of a story is to spark attention, many important elements may be neglected.




Following the explosions and fire, officials have detected hazardous levels of radiation at the Fukushima power plant. The leaks are making conditions dangerous for people living in the plant’s vicinity, and the hazards could spread as far as North America if a full meltdown occurs.


The radiation at Fukushima is being measured using sieverts. One sievert is equal to 1,000 millisieverts, and the lowest level at which increases in cancer are clearly evident is around 100 millisieverts per year. After Fukushima power plant’s explosion Tuesday, radiation levels near Reactors 3 and 4 were extremely high.

At 10:22, the radiation detectors measured 30 millisieverts per hour between Reactors 2 and 3. Near Reactor 3 it measured 400 millisieverts, and 100 millisieverts near Reactor 4. These measurements are definitely different than they were before because these levels would have an impact on people.


Also, a continental air mass heading south is bringing with it a large amount of moisture. Japanese authorities are warning Fukushima residents to not go outdoors because radioactive particles can dissolve in rain, making it very hazardous.

This is the system that is continuing to sort of stay offshore, but it is already beginning to bring with it those cold northerly winds. And then this next area of pressure this is coming in, and the winds at this point will be a lot colder, and also stronger, and there’s a lot more moisture in this system.


U.S. government nuclear experts warn that if there is a complete meltdown of any of the reactors’ cores, large amounts of radiation would infiltrate the ground, air and water. Radiation could even reach the atmosphere and spread over the Pacific, Canada and the western United States.

在這次日本強震中不幸罹難的人數,日本官方確認已經超過三千人,至今依然有一萬五千人以上失聯。日本關東地區的靜岡東部,台北晚間9點半左右發生芮氏規模6.0的地震,深度10公里,屬淺層地震。最大震度出現在靜岡縣,震度超過6。


另外,日本旅遊警示層級再度提高,台灣外交部剛剛對關東發布紅色旅遊警示,包含東京在內,建議國人不宜前往。目前已經發布紅色燈號的區域包括東北地區還有北海道的東部、南部。
在經歷天災浩劫過後的社會動盪,在日本震後,看似少之又少。台灣一位部落客在地震發生的同一天,馬上發表文章表示,日本民眾鎮定的表現,是因為日本公共電視台NHK的平衡報導。而國內媒體專家也強調,台灣在報導災難新聞時,還是有許多進步的空間。

雖然其它媒體可能選擇播放更加生動的畫面,媒體專家一致認為,NHK不但提供許多有用的資訊,鎮定的報導方式,也鼓勵著許多失落的民眾。

生動聳動的畫面雖然可能吸引觀眾,但要是一則新聞的用意只是為了收視率,許多更重要的資訊,可能因此被忽略。
日本福島第一核電廠外洩危機,今天上午第二反應爐的壓力控制室,傳出爆炸,導致第三號反應爐附近的輻射值,爆增至400毫西弗,當局一度將非工作人員撤離,還將電廠上空劃為禁航區!不過一天搶救下來,輻射量似乎開始下降。


福島核電廠的輻射測量使用西弗為單位,一個西弗,就是一千個毫西弗,如果人每年吸收100個毫西弗,那麼得癌症的比率就會增加,經過週二的福島核電廠爆炸,3號機和4號機附近的輻射量都非常高。

輻射偵測器在十點二十二分,測得二號到三號機一帶有30毫西弗,3號機附近有400毫西弗,4號機附近有100毫西弗,數值與單位和過去不同,因為這個量肯定對人體造成影響


另外,由於大陸冷氣團南下,帶來大量水氣,當局也呼籲福島縣民眾別出門,因為雨水會溶解輻射物質,淋到這種黑雨,恐怕對人體有害。

這是一直在外海的低壓系統,但目前正被寒冷的北風南下影響,因此下一波風向變成這樣(西北),會更冷,更強,水氣也更多


日本核廠危機,也讓美國華府核子專家表示,萬一反應爐爐心完全熔毀,輻射物質將滲透到土地、空氣和水當中,甚至飄進大氣層,橫跨太平洋,直撲加拿大和美國西岸。
